Steve, it’s crap like this that makes me hate your inconsistent characterization.

I’m literally a little nauseous here.

Also, not crazy about Clint’s portrayal either.

Ouch, dude. I’ll try not to take that too personally, but ouch. 

My issue with this scene isn’t so much what they’re saying as when they’re saying it, and how. Haven’t these two hashed this out a few million times by now? Haven’t we seen that Clint’s greatest desire is to be Cap? What’s the point of all this grimacing and glowering? It’s hardly new stuff.

So why is Clint acting like this is the first time any of this has come up? You’d think he was a new recruit, not an established hero who has confronted his past and faced his own shortcomings. He’s made a huge transition from his origins and has functioned as the bedrock of a number of teams.

So what the hell’s happened? I’d write this off as a flashback except for the issue number. That’s why I’m so pissed about how Steve has been written so wildly different by so many authors over the years. I can’t glean any context out of what he’s saying or how he’s acting because THERE IS NO TRUE STEVE ROGERS, just a man adrift in time. He’s everything to everybody, which apparently here means a real dick.

I’m not ashamed to admit that I prefer the kinder Captain Americas I’ve read, or at least the ones that use their authority effectively rather than swinging it around like a club. The Thunderbolts haven’t had any dealings with this species of Stevicus Rogerians, but I know Clint must have. That’s why I would expect him to be responding to this little pep talk like an angered friend, not an insulted stranger. “Jarhead”? What the hell is up with that?
